The Lighthouse Award

A lighthouse awardEven though I’ve been a tardy blogger, I’m thrilled to pieces that Mimi from PsychologistMimi has nominated me for the Lighthouse Award. Being nominated by such an interesting and adventurous blogger is very exciting!  This award was created by a  fellow blogger in order to recognize those blogs that bring “light to a dark world.”  I feel very honored that Mimi would include me in her list of nominees.

Like with most awards there’s a list of rules I have to follow in order to claim this achievement.

1.Display the award certificate on the blog.  Done!  It’s on this post and featured on my sidebar display.

2. Write a post and link back to the blogger that nominated you. You’re reading it right now! 🙂  Did I mention that the lovely Mimi from PsychologistMimi nominated me?

3. Inform your nominees of their award nominations.

I’ll be doing that very shortly!

4. Share three ways that you like to help other people

(This one is hard, as I’m not involved in any major organizations.  I try to be ever helpful in my day-to-day living.)

1. I enjoy inspiring others to live a healthier lifestyle by sharing the fitness, weight loss, and behavior modification information that I’ve been learning through my bariatric program.

2. I love being there for my friends and family.  Whether its listening to a friend who’s feeling down, cooking a meal for a sick relative, or helping my daughter study for a test that she’s worried about, I really like making people feel better.

3. I have an open, accepting, and compassionate heart and treat everyone with kindness.

5. There is no limit to the number of people who you can nominate.

This is the good part!  I nominate:

  • Kim, from Always Thinking I’m Fat:  I love Kim’s positive attitude, and her real-life stories.  If we lived near one another, I know we’d hang out! Her dedication to losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle is a daily inspiration to me!
  • Rob, from Weight 2 Lose 2013:Rob is an active dad, a musician, and an avid gardener.  He also seems to know quite a lot about Ancient Aliens!  He always has a bright, positive attitude, and a friendly comment to share!
  • Elaine, from Foodbod:  Elaine is a dedicated stay-at-home mom and an amazing vegetarian cook.  I wish I lived near her so I could sample some!  She’s been a wonderful inspiration to me throughout my weight loss journey.

6. Have fun.

This is the easy part, I’m always having fun! 🙂

Thanks again to the lovely Mimi for this wonderful honor!

Disappearing Woman Awards Weekend (or however long it takes :))

My blogging buddies make me feel like a winner!! <3 Photo via Microsoft Word clip art
My blogging buddies make me feel like a winner!!

I’ve been guiltily sitting on more than a handful of honors for quite a few months. I’ve shamefacedly posted articles about exercise, weight loss and bathing suit shopping, all the while knowing that I have some very special people to thank for, and honor with, the awards that they’ve graciously bestowed upon me.  So for the next few days, or more, I’ll be addressing the following amazing bloggers:

Mimi, at PsychologistMimi, for The Light House Award

Kim, at Always Thinking I’m Fat, for The Quintet of Radiance Awards, the Liebster Award, and the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.

Lita Doolan, at Any old world uncovered by new writing, for The Beautiful Blogger Award

Rob, at Weight 2 Lose 2013, for The Sunshine Award, The Liebster Award, The Wonderful Team Member Readership Award, and the coveted Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Award!

I sincerely hope that I haven’t missed anyone who’s been gracious enough to honor me.  I usually copy and paste the awarder’s post in a word doc as soon as I get it, but if I’ve forgotten someone, please remind me.

I’ll be working very diligently on my award assignments over the next few days, and wish to send a very heartfelt thank you to all of the fabulous bloggers who’ve nominated me! ❤

Will Exercise For Prizes

Prizes are always excellent exercise motivation!
Prizes are always excellent exercise motivation!

Did you know that this week is the 10th annual Medical Fitness Week? Wellness Centers all over the world will be celebrating the promotion of healthy fitness levels in people of all ages and abilities.  The wellness center that I belong to, has an entire week of exciting events planned; fitness walks, swims, health and fitness speakers, and daily prizes!  Yes, I said prizes!

Before I began my weight loss and fitness journey, the last thing I would have been interested in was an entire seven days celebrating fitness and health.  Now I feel completely jazzed to know that I’m feeling healthy enough to participate in this week’s main event: The Worldwide Walking Challenge , where I’ve pledged to walk 70,000 Steps in 7 Days, beginning tomorrow.

I normally tend to embrace most things I do with a fair amount of gusto, but when my chosen events include prizes, I amp things up to a whole other level!   So my gym bag is packed, my workout playlist is updated, and my water bottle is filled and waiting in the fridge.  My gas tank is full and I’ll be heading to the gym first thing in the morning to begin my day with a nice, brisk  10,000 step (approx. 5 miles) walk around their padded track.

In addition to getting in some excellent cardio, for every 10,000 steps I take, I’ll be entered into a drawing for fabulous fitness-themed prizes!  If I do all 70,000 steps, I’ll be entered into a drawing for a mystery grand prize.  Phrases like mystery grand prize tend to get me even more pumped up!

The real truth is, I’d give this challenge my absolute all for zero prizes.  If my name doesn’t get pulled for a trinket of some kind, I’ll still end my week as a winner.  70,000 steps is guaranteed to strengthen my muscles and burn enough calories for me to lose another pound over these next 7 days, just from walking.

Anyone else up for the 70,000 step challenge this week?

Boy, do I ever wish that the challenge had started this weekend! We did a ton of walking on our NYC trip!

The Liebster Award

Yesterday, I was honored to receive another award from the lovely and talented Lita Doolan of Any old world uncovered by new writing.  Thanks, Lita!! It’s the historic Liebster Award given to help people discover new blogs.

Like all blogging awards, it comes with a few rules, and here they are:

The Rules:

(1) Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog

(2) You must answer the 10 questions given to you by the nominee before you.

(3) Nominate 10 of your favorite blogs with fewer than 200 followers and notify them of their nomination. (I may have broken this rule because I’m so new here!)

(4) Come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer.

Here are the wonderful questions that Lita asked me:

1)What is your favorite building to look at?

It’s nothing historical or famous, but the condo building where my husband and I stay for two weeks each summer at the beach is my favorite place to see. I know it means two weeks of fun, sun, and time with my hubby!

(2) Is there a city that has changed you in some way (if so which one)?

I’ve lived for most of my life in the suburbs of Washington, DC.  I feel very fortunate that I’ve always had fast access to the museums and cultural events there.

(3) On a day off what museum or gallery would you visit?

This is a hard question, as visiting just about any museum is probably my favorite type of day out. The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan is a big favorite of mine. However, if I could go anywhere in the world, I’d choose the Louvre, because I’ve never been there and I’ve always wanted to go.

(4) If you were putting a raft together to survive the floods what would be your secret building material (it can be crazy or practical)?

I would fill in any cracks with chocolate Optifast bars.  They don’t taste good at all, but they have the consistency of hardened tar and would both keep me afloat and keep me from starving!

(5) If food had no calories what would you fill your table and plate with?

Definitely nothing sweet!  I’m now in my 5th week of drinking Optifast shakes. They’re so sweet that I don’t care if I have anything sugary ever again!  I would honestly love an assortment of roasted veggies–baby potatoes, butternut squash, shallots, parsnips, carrots, red onion, garlic and cherry tomatoes.  My daughter made this several days ago, and the aroma was heavenly!

(6) What is your favorite method of transport?

Years ago I would have said airplane or speedboat, now days I’m pretty happy in my zippy little car.

(7) Do you remember the first time you smiled and around what age were you?

I wish I did.  I’ve always been a smiley person, so I’ll bet I was a few weeks old.

(8) What (who or where) inspires your writing?

My personal experiences and my family are my greatest sources of inspiration.  I haven’t written a lot about my husband on this blog, but he’s a huge source of material—especially humorous stories!

(9) What is your favourite body of water (ocean, pool, spa…)?

The ocean for my favorite view and a pool for my favorite place to swim (I like to know that nothing creepy is swimming around me!)

(10) What advice would you give to your younger self (fun, fictional or factual)?

This is a good one!  Be more relaxed, break a few rules, and don’t worry.  Most things you worry about NEVER come to pass.

Here are the questions for my winners:

  1. What’s something about yourself that you’re most proud of?
  2. If you had to spend a year in one place, where would that place be and why?
  3. What’s your most embarrassing moment?
  4. My guilty pleasure is watching trash TV, what’s yours?
  5. What teacher had the most impact on you in school and why?
  6. What was your favorite vacation ever?
  7. What book or movie is your life most like?
  8. Who or what is the main inspiration for your blog posts?
  9. Have you ever made a prank phone call?  Tell me about it!
  10. What’s the funniest You Tube clip you’ve ever watched?  Can you share it?

This is my list of winners:

Thanks so much again to Lita Doolan of Any old world uncovered by new writing!
