Life’s a Beach when you Don’t Feel like a Whale

Greetings from the Outer Banks of North Carolina!  We’ve been here for two days and are having a blast. We’re staying in a small, second story, walk-up condo on the beach that we’ve rented for the past few years, and though everything about it is the same as usual, it feels vastly different to me.

  • In past years, the two flights of very steep steps caused me to make several rest stops on my way up.  Now, I swiftly spring right up them without breaking a sweat or panting like a puppy!
  • While cooking healthy meals for us, I’ve finally become acquainted with the very well-appointed kitchen of this place and realize that the owners did a fabulous job of it with wonderful, high-end, accoutrements.
  • The cost of one week of groceries is practically equivalent to what my husband and I would spend on a nice meal out with wine, appetizers, entrée, and dessert.  We’re saving money!
  • Reaching the beach used to be a major ordeal for me, even though it only requires climbing the steps that go over a dune in front of the condo.  Now, I’m up those steps like a shot, and I can help my husband carry our beach stuff.  Last time, I could barely carry myself!
  • My goals and priorities while here have enormously shifted.  In the past, it was all about where we would eat.  Now, it’s all about what activities we can do that will keep us physically fit.  We’ve been doing plenty of beach walking, and swimming.  My big goal is to go to Jockey’s Ridge State Park and climb the giant sand dunes.  I haven’t done this since I was a kid, and for the past decade have stayed back while the rest of my family has enjoyed it.  Tomorrow, we’re planning to conquer the dunes and I feel very excited and emotional about meeting this long-time goal.  (I’ll be taking plenty of pictures!)

I hope all of my readers have an excellently gorgeous day!

In the meantime, here are a few shots of the beach area in front of the condo:

  1. Wait….you WEREN’T carrying any of these bags, umbrellas, chairs or coolers last year?!? Dang!

Seriously, we are having such an easier, more enjoyable time now, aren’t we? I love you!

  2. What a beautiful view! and what great accomplishments you have made! I hope to be feeling some of those rewards soon myself too!

  3. Nothing like eating well AND saving money! Healthy living has many benefits and you’re experiencing some of them on your vacation. That’s quite the view that you have. Don’t you just love the sound of the ocean when you go to sleep? Have a great vacation!

    1. Thank you, Rob! It is a gorgeous view! Everyone must have ended their time here yesterday, because there are only 3 other units at our condo that are filled. The beaches were practically empty yesterday and I hope even emptier today! I do love the sound of the ocean at night.
If the weather cooperates, I hope to get some good shots from Jockey’s Ridge this evening. There are enormous dunes there that you’re allowed to climb. At sunset it’s just gorgeous–like another world! 🙂 Have a great day!

      1. Haha, my climbing skills are not so great. It takes determination and persistence. But the reward will be worth it. Most important is to have fun while challenging yourself.

    1. Thank you! I think we’re going to conquer them tomorrow evening. My husband and I went to the outlets for sneakers for him and several hours later we’re back at our condo. Time flies when things are 60% off! 🙂

  4. My hubby is on the program. We are on the Outer Banks and food is not an issue for him. Easy peasy. No worries for his meals. Keep up the good work. Meds about gone as well. Needs a new swim suit before loses it:)

    1. Hi Sue! Nice to meet you! I’m glad your husband is doing so well. 🙂 Hooray for getting off meds! It’s a wonderful program. I’ve now lost nearly 70 pounds and am almost at my goal weight. We love the Outer Banks and plan to move to Manteo after my husband retires. We really enjoyed our visit there, as we do every year. I did eat out a few times while there on this trip, but we mostly cooked at our condo to stay away from too much temptation. Vacations used to equal lots of eating out for us. This time we did much better. Do you live in the Outer Banks full time?
