Will Exercise For Prizes

Prizes are always excellent exercise motivation!
Prizes are always excellent exercise motivation!

Did you know that this week is the 10th annual Medical Fitness Week? Wellness Centers all over the world will be celebrating the promotion of healthy fitness levels in people of all ages and abilities.  The wellness center that I belong to, has an entire week of exciting events planned; fitness walks, swims, health and fitness speakers, and daily prizes!  Yes, I said prizes!

Before I began my weight loss and fitness journey, the last thing I would have been interested in was an entire seven days celebrating fitness and health.  Now I feel completely jazzed to know that I’m feeling healthy enough to participate in this week’s main event: The Worldwide Walking Challenge , where I’ve pledged to walk 70,000 Steps in 7 Days, beginning tomorrow.

I normally tend to embrace most things I do with a fair amount of gusto, but when my chosen events include prizes, I amp things up to a whole other level!   So my gym bag is packed, my workout playlist is updated, and my water bottle is filled and waiting in the fridge.  My gas tank is full and I’ll be heading to the gym first thing in the morning to begin my day with a nice, brisk  10,000 step (approx. 5 miles) walk around their padded track.

In addition to getting in some excellent cardio, for every 10,000 steps I take, I’ll be entered into a drawing for fabulous fitness-themed prizes!  If I do all 70,000 steps, I’ll be entered into a drawing for a mystery grand prize.  Phrases like mystery grand prize tend to get me even more pumped up!

The real truth is, I’d give this challenge my absolute all for zero prizes.  If my name doesn’t get pulled for a trinket of some kind, I’ll still end my week as a winner.  70,000 steps is guaranteed to strengthen my muscles and burn enough calories for me to lose another pound over these next 7 days, just from walking.

Anyone else up for the 70,000 step challenge this week?

Boy, do I ever wish that the challenge had started this weekend! We did a ton of walking on our NYC trip!

    1. You win the prestigious Referee of the Year Award!! Hooray for you–see the balloons and confetti falling from the ceiling? 🙂 !! Kids will definitely keep you on your toes! Hopefully they’ll be better buddies tomorrow!

      1. People are too sensitive today! Besides, my boys tortured me to no end by making me spend nearly 100 at the theater for Captain America. We could’ve spent 2 dollars for microwave popcorn and watched a SpongeBob marathon instead. The formula is lemon juice, with a bit of paprika for color. 😉

      2. Wish I had know that formula when I taught school! It would have been great for breaking up fights on playground duty, but not so great for my career! Can you imagine the Huffington Post headlines? “Teacher Maces Students on Playground” I’m totally kidding!!! But these days totally kidding can still get you a Huff Post headline! “Teacher Totally Kids About Macing Students on Playground; Should She be Publically Stoned?”
The movie theatre is so expensive these days. It’s difficult to not spend $100 if you’re taking the whole family and getting snacks. I gave my kids and their significant others movie theatre gift cards for Easter in lieu of candy.
How was Captain America? I haven’t had a chance to see it yet. I loved the first one.

      3. Lol! I was worried when I posted that about the mace that people would be horrified. Sometimes jokes don’t translate well in posts! 😉 The movies are so expensive when you factor in popcorn and skittles. One of my boys didn’t want to go, so 2 boxes of popcorn, two small drinks and one package of skittles was 20 dollars. I wasn’t aware that Robert Redford was in it. It was ok. I was really tired and that was probably why I wasn’t so enthused about it. The action and effects were top notch and Scarlett Johansson was really good. 🙂

  1. Hon, I have no doubt you can do this…”in stride” (sorry). Also, I am so very proud of you. Have a smooth, enjoyable stroll tomorrow!

  2. How often I count my steps when out walking – ok the pedometer does it for me 😉 Comfy shoes and away you head, hopefully the mystery grand prize is not a year’s supply of chocolate cake! Wishing you well and I am sure you will nail it!

    1. Thank you! I’m pretty sure it will be some free months of gym membership, or something similar! 🙂 I have my pedometer reset and ready for morning!

Ah! Chocolate cake–what is that stuff again? It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten! 🙂 Hope you’re doing well. 🙂

    1. Hooray!!! Yes you can!! You’ll have to tell me how it goes. At least you should have some gorgeous weather for walking. It’s going to be cold and rainy here all week. I’m certainly lucky to have a good indoor track to walk on at the wellness center! 🙂 Good luck to you!! 🙂

    1. Awww, you don’t have to do the 10,000 steps all at once. You could do half in the morning and half in the evening. 10,000 steps translates to about five miles. I just started walking the track and figured that if I got tired before I finished, I’d take a rest and then go back to it. I just did it all at once yesterday because I had so many other things to do, some of which–like sitting at the dentist’s office for two hours–were fairly inactive. I’ll bet you could do it if you broke it up throughout the day. 🙂
